Encyclopedia of Zoroastrianism. Saoshyant.
Saoshyant is a pivotal figure in Zoroastrian eschatology, revered as the future savior who will usher in the final renovation of the world, known as Frashokereti. The term “Saoshyant” derives from the Avestan word saoshyant, meaning “one who brings benefit,” reflecting his role as a restorer of righteousness and harmony. According to Zoroastrian texts like the Avesta and later Pahlavi writings, Saoshyant will be born of a virgin impregnated by the preserved seed of the prophet Zarathustra, symbolizing divine continuity and purity.
Saoshyant’s mission is to lead the ultimate triumph of Ahura Mazda, the Wise Lord, over Angra Mainyu, the evil spirit. He will resurrect the dead, judge humanity, and purify the world through a cosmic ordeal involving molten metal, cleansing both the earth and its inhabitants of sin and corruption. This act will eradicate evil, heal the cosmos, and establish an eternal state of asha (truth and order). Often depicted as the last of three saviors—preceded by figures like Hushedar and Hushedar-mah—Saoshyant embodies hope and redemption in Zoroastrian theology. His arrival signifies the fulfillment of the religion’s dualistic worldview, where human agency and divine intervention converge to achieve everlasting peace and perfection.
“Through righteous deeds, you aid Ahura Mazda in restoring the world’s perfect harmony.”
